The film 'Hope' has surpassed 2 million viewers just five days after its release. This marks the fastest box office momentum among films released this year. The film is directed by Na Hong-jin, produced by Forged Films, and distributed by Plus M Entertainment.
The story follows Beom-seok (played by Hwang Jung-min), the head of the Hopo Port branch office in the Demilitarized Zone, who faces unbelievable incidents following a report of a tiger sighting. Notably, although he does not appear on the poster, actor Eum Moon-suk—who plays the carpenter Yang-bae—is drawing significant attention from audiences, earning the nickname 'root of all evil' due to his bizarre expressions and manner of speaking.
Eum Moon-suk's Radical Transformation and the Supporting Cast's Performance
In this work, Eum Moon-suk attempted a radical visual transformation, concealing his face with special effects makeup. He drives the flow of the story by engaging in unpredictable actions at the center of the incidents shaking the village.
The performances of the supporting cast also bolster the film's success. Lim Hyunsik played Hae-sul, a resident who witnesses the monster, delivering comedic scenes, while Lee Sang-hee played the villager Nak-yeon, acting alongside Hwang Jung-min. Eum Moon-suk's career began in music. He debuted in the early 2000s under the stage name 'SIC' and released a studio album, later forming the group 'Monsters' with rapper One Shot and Como. In 2013, his background as a backup dancer for Ryang Hyun Ryang Ha and god was revealed when he appeared as a krump dancer on Mnet's 'Dancing 9.'
Since then, he has varied his characters through various works. In the 2019 SBS drama 'The Fiery Priest,' he played the gangster subordinate Jang Ryong and won the New Actor Award at the SBS Drama Awards. In the 2022 film 'The Roundup,' he transformed into the criminal organization member Jang Gi-cheol. He continued to demonstrate a wide acting spectrum by playing the principled Captain Kang in the film '6/45' and the cold-blooded villain Cheon Kwang-jin in the drama 'Taxi Driver 3.'
