K-pop dance and Taekwondo heat up a 39°C Bishkek camp

University of Seoul volunteers wrap a 7-day Bishkek summer camp with Koryo-in and local students performing Korean culture programs.

2026 Summer Global Volunteer Corps Summer Camp held amidst 39°C heatwave

As temperatures soared to 39°C, the final presentation for the '2026 Summer Global Volunteer Corps Summer Camp' was held on the 12th at School No. 9 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. A total of 110 youths, including local students and Koryo-in (ethnic Koreans) students, participated in this camp. Among them, approximately 60 were Koryo-in students, who teamed up with local students to participate in Korean language education, Taekwondo, K-pop dance, and cheerleading programs.

Outstanding student awards and unveiling of school environment improvement mural

During the presentation, students recognized for their achievements during the camp period received awards from the Director of the Korean Education Center in Bishkek. Alinur from the Taekwondo team 'Kkiruk-ideul,' Akclay from the K-pop dance team 'Popcorn,' and Bermet from the cheerleading team 'U-KISS' were named award recipients. Additionally, the volunteers unveiled a large mural created to improve the school environment. Volunteer Son Jae-hee introduced the production process and the final result of the mural installed at the school entrance on-site.

Seoul City University volunteer corps concludes 7 days of activities

The camp consisted of programs prepared over approximately three months by the 23rd Global Volunteer Corps of University of Seoul. The 28 volunteers led Korean language education and cultural experience activities in Bishkek from the 6th to the 12th. Kim Kwang-jae, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Kyrgyz Republic, visited the site to observe the students' classes and experiential events.

Cho Chan-woo, Director of the Korean Education Center in Bishkek, stated that this camp was a time for Koryo-in students and local students to grow together through the Korean language and culture. Based on these achievements, the Korean Education Center in Bishkek plans to expand cooperation with Korean universities and related institutions and increase international exchange programs for Koryo-in compatriots and local youth.
