Good Bye My Princess bends palace walls for a haunted Netflix mystery
Netflix previews Good Bye My Princess, a Jan. 7 occult mystery with Cho Seung-woo, Nam Joo Hyuk and Roh Yoon-seo chasing an East Palace curse.
Two Worlds Realized Through Distorted Sets and Visual Devices
Ahead of its release, the Netflix series 'Good Bye My Princess' has unveiled production stills capturing its original worldview. The series follows Gu Cheon (Nam Joo-hyuk), who possesses the ability to traverse between the worlds of reality and spirits, and Saeng-gang (Roh Yoon-seo), a palace maid harboring a secret, as they follow the King's (Cho Seung-woo) orders to track the truth behind a curse cast upon the East Palace.

Director Choi Jung-gyu focused heavily on visual devices to maximize the sense of heterogeneity between the human and spirit realms. To contrast the two worlds, he differentiated the color palettes and backgrounds, and meticulously adjusted the filming style, editing rhythm, and the texture of music and sound effects to create the sensation that gravity operates differently in each realm.
For the set design, physical distortions were attempted. The floors, pillars, and ceilings were tilted or warped to amplify the sense of strangeness. Even within the same space, two separate sets were constructed with different textures and settings, choosing a method that implements the reality and spirit worlds as independent entities.
'Gwimae' and the Lineage of Spirits Reinterpreting Folklore Monsters
The series features entities rarely seen in conventional occult works. Representative examples include the two-headed snake and the 'Kkeomeoksari' revealed in the main trailer. The production team actively utilized VFX technology to vividly realize these surreal beings, which are re-creations of Korean folklore and oral traditions.
Writers Kwon So-ra and Seo Jea-won carefully selected entities from Korean folk traditions that possessed the necessary abilities to drive the story. While borrowing names of monsters from folktales and historical tales, they differentiated them by modifying their settings to fit the narrative flow under the name 'Gwimae.'
The stages of spirits follow a specific hierarchy. Those who die harboring lingering attachments or regrets become 'ghosts,' and if they harbor even greater resentment, they become 'vengeful spirits.' If the corruption deepens, such as when a vengeful spirit kills a human, they are classified as 'evil spirits.' The setting dictates that if resentment is deep enough, a black grudge clings to them, binding them to the earth and preventing them from ascending.
Collaboration Between Director Choi Jung-gyu and Writers Kwon So-ra and Seo Jea-won
Director Choi Jung-gyu, who directed 'The Devil Judge' and 'Children of Nobody,' has joined forces with writers Kwon So-ra and Seo Jea-won, the authors of 'The Guest' and 'Bulgasal.' Director Choi remarked, "As the episodes progress, the charming details of the worldview are revealed, and they have presented not only mysterious elements but also a meticulously woven narrative flow and character emotions."
The cast features Cho Seung-woo, Nam Joo-hyuk, and Roh Yoon-seo, joined by Kwak Dong-yeon, Jang Young-nam, Tae In-ho, Hwang Young-hee, Hong Seo Joon, and Lee Hong-nae. The Netflix series 'Good Bye My Princess' will be released on Netflix on January 7, 2026.
