Actor Ahn Jae-wook has again opened up about the medical emergency that left him undergoing brain surgery after suddenly collapsing in the United States. On the June 15 broadcast of tvN STORY's entertainment program "What Are You Saving It For," he calmly revisited the moments when subarachnoid hemorrhage made survival uncertain, the difficulty of securing family consent for surgery, and the hospital bill that reached $500,000.

The story has been shared several times before, but the latest broadcast focused on a stark reality faced by someone alone overseas while confronting a life-threatening operation. Ahn's account went beyond celebrity recollection and showed the practical fears that can arise inside a foreign medical system during a sudden crisis.

Ahn said he had not been suffering from ordinary headaches at the time and collapsed in an instant. He described his body turning pale and cold sweat pouring out, adding that the situation could have become even more dangerous if an acquaintance nearby had not found him quickly.

In 2013, while traveling in Las Vegas, Ahn collapsed from a subarachnoid hemorrhage and underwent emergency brain surgery for about five hours. A subarachnoid hemorrhage is a condition in which blood collects in the space between membranes surrounding the brain, and because delayed treatment can lead to brain damage, rapid emergency response is critical.

The hours before surgery were as daunting as the illness itself. Ahn was unmarried at the time and was told that his parents' consent would be needed. He initially hoped to undergo surgery quietly without informing them, but after persuasion from his manager, he eventually let his family know what was happening.

His account of having to ask his manager to stand in for his father at a hospital overseas, with no guardian beside him, highlighted more than a dramatic episode in an entertainer's life. It also revealed the anxiety that any person may have to endure when a medical emergency occurs far from home.

After the operation, another major challenge followed: the bill. Ahn said the U.S. hospital charges came to $500,000, which was around 500 million won at the exchange rate at the time. He later received help from a lawyer specializing in medical issues, negotiated for more than two years, and ultimately reached a settlement reportedly in the range of 100 million won.

"What Are You Saving It For" is a program in which Lee Young Ja and Se-ri Pak treat guests to a meal and share stories about their lives. Within the format, which airs every Monday at 8 p.m., Ahn's confession led less to a sensational bedside memory than to a reflection on how he reset his priorities in life.

A familiar figure to early Hallyu fans through his 1990s drama and music activities, Ahn has continued working across dramas, variety shows, and musicals after a long recovery. Because he has repeatedly spoken about the experience on family entertainment and talk programs, this broadcast also served as a calm look at how he came to view work and relationships after passing through a major turning point.
