'Moana' Takes No. 1 on Opening Day with Over 60,000 Viewers

The live-action adaptation of the Disney animation, 'Moana', rose to the top of the domestic box office immediately upon its release. According to the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network data on the 8th, 'Moana' recorded first place at the box office, drawing 66,806 viewers on its opening day. The cumulative audience count for the day reached 67,430.

Live-Action 'Moana' Claims Number One at Box Office on Opening Day

Directed by Thomas Kail, this film depicts the journey of Moana, a girl chosen by the sea, who sets out into the unknown ocean with the legendary hero Maui to save an island fallen under a curse. Catherine Laga'aia, who plays Moana, is from the South Pacific's Savai'i and Samoa islands, enhancing her synchronization with the character, while Dwayne Johnson joins as Maui. According to Naver Movies, the film is currently holding a user rating of 9.49 out of 10.

Shin Min-a's 'The Eyes' Settles at No. 2... Approaching 1 Million Viewers

The suspense thriller 'The Eyes', starring Shin Min-a, recorded second place at the box office. Directed by Yeom Ji-ho, 'The Eyes' drew 50,516 viewers on its opening day, bringing its cumulative audience count to 981,322. Released on June 24, the film is a remake of the Spanish film 'Julia's Eyes' and follows Seo-jin (played by Shin Min-a), who is losing her sight due to a genetic disease, as she investigates suspicions surrounding the death of her twin sibling, Seo-in (also played by Shin Min-a).

'The Eyes' is on the verge of surpassing 1 million viewers just 15 days after its release. Considering that the average weekday audience is around 40,000, there is a possibility it will hit the 1 million milestone by the 9th. Meanwhile, 'The Eyes' secured second place, overtaking 'Toy Story 5' (34,347 viewers).

Various genres occupied the rankings on the opening day. Third place was taken by 'Toy Story 5' (directed by Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris), followed by Yeon Sang Ho's 'Colony' in fourth (8,623 viewers) and Son Jae-gon's 'Wild Sing' in fifth (4,218 viewers).

On the 15th, Na Hong-jin's fourth feature film 'Hope' and the Spanish thriller remake 'Locked' are set to be released. Na Hong-jin's new film 'Hope' took first place with a real-time reservation rate of 47.3% as of 7:00 AM on the 9th. Christopher Nolan's new film 'The Odyssey', scheduled for release on the 5th of next month, is also drawing significant attention. For this film, which stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong'o, director Nolan and lead actors Matt Damon and Charlize Theron are scheduled to visit Korea on the 3rd of next month.
