The world of 'The Fin' as told by Director Park Se-young and the cast

'The Fin,' an SF art cinema depicting a near-future unified Korea where humans coexist with genetic mutants known as 'Omegas,' is set to meet its audience. Director Park Se-young, along with actors Kim Pureum and KO WOORIM, attended the press screening for 'The Fin' held on the afternoon of the 10th at CGV Yongsan IPARK Mall in Seoul.

Director Park Se-young revealed that the roots of this work lie in her childhood experiences in Canada. Having grown up hearing from her parents that unification would eventually occur, she conceived this original worldview based on her experience of winning first place in a drawing competition where she depicted the walls between South and North Korea crumbling.

This production was co-produced with Philippe Bober, the producer behind 'The Square' and 'Triangle of Sadness.' After meeting Philippe Bober at a film festival through her previous work 'The Fifth Thoracic Vertebra,' Director Park spent 3 to 4 years on the editing process to enhance the film's quality. "I wasn't just filming SF; I was trying to capture the environment I live in," Director Park said, noting her focus on visually manifesting the emotions of the COVID-19 pandemic era.

Kim Pureum and KO WOORIM: Immersing into the 'Omega' characters

The 'Omega,' a core setting of the film, was born through historical cases of minority groups and humanistic contemplation. Kim Pureum, who plays the role of an Omega management official, analyzed her character, stating, "I wanted to try a dark and contradictory role. She is a character who is instinctive, like a young beast that has suddenly gained convictions, yet is trapped in certain thoughts without knowing why." To represent a standardized society, she avoided using dialects and acted as if every character possessed an averaged-out standard.

KO WOORIM stars in his first feature film playing the role of an Omega. Having been active in the music field, he decided to appear in the film, drawn by the opportunity to explore a non-human species. "I thought the Omega would be passive because they had been in a discriminatory society for a long time," KO WOORIM said, explaining that the character was designed so that their personality or facial expressions are not easily revealed. He personally prepared the character's way of speaking to reflect it in his acting.

Starting with its invitation to the Newcomers Competition at the 78th Locarno Film Festival, the film 'The Fin' has gained critical recognition at major film festivals, including the Jeonju International Film Festival. Sisopictures, Essential Films, and Pretty Things Films participated in the production, with Emu Films handling the distribution.
