Family Resister turns one death into two rival funeral halls
MBC daily drama Family Resister hits a series-high 4.9% after Cha Min-gi's death leaves two families holding side-by-side funeral halls.
The Death of Cha Min-gi and Two Separate Funeral Halls
MBC daily drama 'Family Register' continues its upward viewership trend with a shocking turn of events. In the 6th episode aired on the 13th, Cha Min-gi (played by Jeon No-min), who had been fighting a long illness, finally passed away. After being transferred to the intensive care unit and falling into an irreversible state, Cha Min-gi's death was confirmed following his refusal of life-sustaining treatment.

His legal spouse, Noh Young-ju (played by Im Ji-eun), stayed by his side during his final moments. Cha Min-gi held Young-ju's hand to express his apologies, and Young-ju also brought their relationship to a close. His daughter, Na Ji-ni (played by Park Se-young), who arrived late, sobbed in disbelief at her father's death.
The 7th episode depicted the confrontation between two families surrounding the funeral hall. The eldest son, Cha Seung-hyeon (played by Seo Do-young), who is in charge of the funeral, limited the list of bereaved family members to his spouse Noh Young-ju and his sons Cha Seung-hyeon and Cha Seung-woo (played by Jeong Seung-bin). Consequently, Na Se-ri (played by Han Go-eun), who lived with him for 25 years, and daughter Na Ji-ni were excluded from the official list of mourners. Na Se-ri stood her ground by demanding a separate funeral hall, and eventually, two funeral halls were set up side-by-side for the single deceased.
A Funeral Hall Filled with Verbal Abuse and Wailing
The atmosphere of the two funeral halls was starkly different. The hall prepared by Na Se-ri was bustling with condolences and wreaths from figures in the culture and arts sectors, while the legal wife Noh Young-ju's hall was arranged with a modest, family-centered atmosphere. Daughter-in-law Mai (played by Jeong So-young) attempted to save face by urging her family to mobilize wreaths and mourners.
Conflicts between characters within the funeral hall also intensified. The second son, Cha Seung-woo, visited Na Se-ri's funeral hall and hurled verbal abuse at Na Ji-ni while throwing flowers at her. Na Ji-ni expressed the social scrutiny and family coldness she faces, shouting, "I hate Dad the most."
Meanwhile, Im Ji-hu (played by Seong Yi-eon) felt a rift after discovering Do Do-hee's (played by Park Sol-la) private SNS account, and Na Se-ri flustered Na Ji-ni by moving to settle Cha Min-gi's bank accounts.
The 7th episode recorded a viewership rating of 4.9% nationwide and 4.6% in the metropolitan area, breaking the show's own record. 'Family Register' airs every Monday through Friday at 7:05 PM.
